Case Study: Circulor achieves mine-to-manufacturer traceability of conflict minerals with LF Decentralized Trust

A LF Decentralized Trust Case Study

Preview of the Circulor Case Study

Circulor achieves first-ever-mine-tomanufacturer traceability of a conflict mineral with Hyperledger Fabric

Circulor faced the challenge of proving the ethical sourcing of tantalum, a conflict mineral from Rwanda, to meet stringent OECD and regulatory requirements. The existing paper-based system was inefficient and unreliable. To address this, Circulor implemented a traceability solution powered by a permissioned blockchain built on Hyperledger Fabric, provided by LF Decentralized Trust.

The solution created a tamper-proof, mine-to-manufacturer chain of custody using facial recognition, QR codes, and smart contracts to track material transformations. Implemented by Circulor, this system went live in three Rwandan mines and a refinery, slashing compliance costs, providing undeniable proof of conflict-free origins, and boosting revenue potential for ethically sourced ore. The Circulor system handles hundreds of transactions daily and is designed to scale.
