Tesoro Logistics, a major oil and gas distributor, needed to replace aging Lexmark 4227 Plus dot matrix printers used for mission-critical bills of lading in its Southern California terminal district. The company faced rising costs, hard-to-find supplies, and a strict requirement for serial connectivity to its proprietary UNIX network while planning a later move to LAN.

Lexmark recommended the MS610 monochrome laser printer with a serial card, provided demo units for testing, and helped Tesoro Logistics configure the devices for its forms and logo. The rollout delivered reliable, legible output and future LAN compatibility, while sharply reducing costs: two new laser devices and cards cost about the same as one used dot matrix printer, and standard laser paper cost under $50 per case versus more than $11,000 per pallet for specialty dot matrix paper.
