Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office A Policy Partnership with Long-Term Cost Savings

The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office, serving a rapidly growing Michigan community of more than 260,000 with 113 law enforcement officers and 74 corrections deputies, faced a major policy challenge: decades of ad hoc, inconsistent, duplicative and outdated road patrol, law enforcement and corrections policies. Sheriff Steve Kempker concluded that rewriting everything in-house would consume significant payroll hours, risk legal gaps and inject personal bias, so the agency turned to Lexipol and its Michigan Law Enforcement and Corrections Policies and Training solutions for a more reliable, scalable approach.

Lexipol’s Professional Services team integrated OCSO’s existing content into the Michigan master policies and worked with the agency to add custom policies, producing clearer, more concise policy manuals that reduce the time staff spend drafting and updating procedures. As a result, Lexipol has helped condense policy content, improved legal compliance and positioned the agency for long-term cost savings by freeing personnel for operational duties, reducing exposure to policy-based litigation and benefiting the roughly 30 contract municipalities the sheriff’s office serves.
