Hillside Fire Department Improving Policy Focus and Access

Hillside Fire Department, a 25-member career department serving a Chicago suburb, inherited massive binders of policies that were often unwieldy or actually procedures rather than clear policy. Chief Jeffrey Pilz turned to Lexipol, purchasing the Illinois Fire Policy Manual, Daily Training Bulletin service and a quick-start implementation package to establish a stronger, more usable policy foundation.

Lexipol’s Implementation Services assessed HFD’s content, helped distinguish policy from procedure, and guided review and rollout via its policy platform and mobile app; firefighters could acknowledge policies and complete training bulletins on their devices. As a result, Lexipol enabled HFD to condense long documents (some policies reduced from 12 pages to about 2), improve access and searchable policy retrieval, and provide documented proof of policy issuance, acknowledgement and training—driving line-level buy-in and clearer, more defensible department practices.
