Grinnell Police Department Facilitating Access to Up-to-Date Policy Content

Grinnell Police Department, a 14‑officer agency serving about 9,000 residents in Grinnell, Iowa, struggled to keep policies current and to distribute and document officer acknowledgements. Chief Dennis Reilly was spending significant time updating policies (for example use-of-force changes) and managing an onerous paper-and‑PDF dissemination process that limited officers’ access to policy when they were in the field. The department has been using Lexipol since 2016 and turned to Lexipol’s Iowa Law Enforcement Policies and Training solution to address these challenges.

Lexipol implemented a web‑based Knowledge Management System with policy content created and maintained by legal and subject‑matter experts, Daily Training Bulletins (DTBs) for ongoing high‑risk training, and automated tracking of policy reviews and acknowledgements. The shift eliminated paper acknowledgements, gave officers in‑car and mobile access to up‑to‑date policy, reduced the chief’s time spent researching and updating policy, and allowed staff to quickly demonstrate policy (for example, during a recent community meeting on immigration). Lexipol’s system also enforces recurring reviews and documents compliance, strengthening training and accountability.
