Eurotronic Technology cuts thermostat power use to 70 mW with Lemberg Solutions

Eurotronic Technology, a Germany-based provider of smart heating solutions, sought to enhance its product line with a smart thermostat based on the LoRaWAN protocol. Their challenge was to develop radio module software that would minimize average power consumption to 70 mW, ensure reliable communication in large buildings, and support secure over-the-air firmware updates. They engaged Lemberg Solutions to address these requirements.

Lemberg Solutions developed and optimized the firmware for the LoRaWAN radio module, partially reworking an existing ST library to force low-power modes and implementing secure OTA updates with image signing and encryption. This solution successfully reduced the thermostat's average power consumption to the target of 70 mW, which significantly extended the battery life to over five years. The collaboration resulted in a robust product that Eurotronic Technology is preparing to launch.
