L.E.K. Consulting worked with a Southeast Asian private equity firm that was looking to acquire a local hypermarket chain in Malaysia. The customer's challenge was to assess the target asset, which was well-regarded for its fresh produce and large basket sizes, within a broader Malaysian large-format grocery retail sector that was historically challenged by competition from smaller, more convenient modern retail formats.
Despite the market challenges, L.E.K. Consulting advised the client to proceed with the acquisition and provided strategic recommendations to grow the asset. Under the new management's strategy, the business saw very strong growth: revenue grew at approximately 8% per annum and EBITDA grew at 25% per annum since FY16. L.E.K. subsequently helped prepare the business for a successful exit, which was achieved to another investor who appreciated the asset's quality and growth story.
