A Leidos Case Study
The Orlando Utilities Commission (OUC) faced the challenge of increasing the power capacity of two aging 230kV transmission lines that served a rapidly growing and environmentally sensitive area. With constraints on downtime and an estimated $20 million cost for a full rebuild, OUC partnered with Leidos to find an affordable and effective solution to upgrade the lines while minimizing environmental impact and maintaining reliability.
Leidos recommended reconductoring the lines with an innovative Aluminum Conductor Composite Core (ACCC) solution. This approach, combined with Leidos's specialized expertise in retrofitting existing lattice towers, allowed the project to be completed with minimal structural work. The solution saved OUC up to $12 million compared to initial estimates, was finished on an aggressive schedule, and significantly reduced the environmental impact of the construction.
