National Grid saves over $200,000 with Leidos on substation foundation remediation

National Grid, a major energy utility, faced a challenge at its critical Bear Swamp substation where the existing pier foundations were not strong enough to meet new serviceability criteria for an upgrade. The vendor Leidos was engaged to help determine if the foundations could be reused to avoid costly and disruptive replacements, which required a field investigation to test the actual strength and embedment of the existing piers.

Leidos implemented an innovative soil strengthening solution using controlled low-strength material (CLSM) to reinforce the ground around the existing piers, making them suitable for reuse. This approach saved over $200,000 in construction costs by eliminating the need for demolition and new foundations, prevented major planned outages, and significantly reduced the project's carbon footprint.
