A Leica Biosystems Case Study
The independent university pathology laboratory faced growing histopathology workloads and needed to increase productivity and standardization while reducing technologist hands-on time. A key challenge was the lengthy slide drying process after coverslipping, which is essential for safe handling and digital pathology, as the existing film coverslipper method required extended passive drying or additional steps using a fume hood.
Leica Biosystems implemented its HistoCore SPECTRA CV Coverslipper with a built-in active heating oven to streamline the workflow. The evaluation at the laboratory demonstrated that this solution reduced the total turnaround time from coverslipping to completed slide drying by 47% compared to the previous film coverslipper's drying station, and by 9.7% versus using an external fume hood. Leica Biosystems' solution also minimized staff exposure to xylene fumes by eliminating workflow steps.
