Louisiana Department Of Education Creates And Publishes Dynamic, Homegrown Ela Curricula Using Learnzillion

The Louisiana Department of Education, which serves 131 school districts and 721,197 students, faced a major challenge after adopting new state ELA standards: available commercial curricula were largely misaligned, and their first iteration of homegrown ELA Guidebooks—published as PDFs—proved cumbersome for teachers to use. To make the curriculum accessible and actionable, LDOE partnered with LearnZillion and leveraged LearnZillion’s enterprise platform and professional services.

LearnZillion rebuilt and retooled the Guidebooks on its platform, simplifying teacher guidance and closing the “paper-to-practice” gap so teachers could deliver consistent, standards-aligned instruction. As a result, 80 percent of Louisiana districts now use ELA Guidebooks for grades 3–8, 95 percent of the state’s top-growth schools and districts used Guidebooks 2.0, teachers reported stronger understanding of standards (per a RAND 2016 finding), and classrooms showed quicker, measurable improvements after rollout — all achieved through the LearnZillion partnership.
