Pixowl, the San Francisco–based mobile game studio behind The Sandbox, faced the common indie-game challenge of converting a large launch audience into retained, engaged players. Although the team had built a strong community and used targeted push notifications for updates, contests and promotions, one-size-fits-all send times weren’t matching individual play habits, limiting retention and monetization.

Pixowl A/B tested Leanplum’s “Optimal Time” push delivery—which predicts the best moment to message each user—against their regular send schedule. The personalized timing produced substantially better outcomes: +16% average opens, +2% average revenue per purchase and +17% revenue for users in the Optimal Time group. Pixowl has since adopted the customized delivery to boost engagement and revenue while reducing intrusive notifications.
