Compass Implements Data-Driven Loss Prevention to Drive Bottom-Line Improvements

Compass Group Canada, a $1.5 billion food service and support provider operating 2,300 retail locations and roughly 8,000 cashiers, set out to improve operational efficiency by tackling retail shrinkage. Until recently the company relied mostly on employee tips and manual follow-ups, and its rich POS and surveillance data remained unused—limiting detection, prosecution and efficient deployment of investigative resources.

Using Lavastorm analytics, Compass unified POS data from multiple systems, calculated key metrics (voids, drawer opens, timing) and correlated anomalies with surveillance video to prioritize investigations. The data-driven program quickly improved detection accuracy (initially identifying thefts with 100% accuracy), reduced shrinkage, freed auditing resources, strengthened court-ready cases, and created a scalable loss-prevention capability that changed company culture.
