Naviance builds 9 domain services with LaunchDarkly to modernize its monolith

Naviance, a product line within the education technology company PowerSchool, faced a scaling challenge as its monolithic software architecture could not support concurrent work by hundreds of engineers. The monolith locked the team into outdated technologies, created lengthy and risky release cycles, and hindered productivity. To unlock the monolith for a progressive migration to microservices, they turned to LaunchDarkly for its feature management platform.

Using LaunchDarkly's feature flags, Naviance gained controlled, phased rollouts for both new micro frontends and critical data migrations, building confidence and ensuring quality. This allowed them to modernize progressively, building nine separate domain services since 2019 while improving the original monolith. The solution resulted in daily code deployments, higher test coverage, and strong developer sentiment, with LaunchDarkly ranking highly in internal surveys for developer happiness and preference.
