L-3 Communications Delivers 3D Manufacturing Information to the Shop Floor

L-3 Communications, a large aerospace and defense manufacturer, wanted to improve shop-floor productivity, reduce rework and late engineering changes, and capture retiring employees’ knowledge. To do this, L-3 Communications West looked for a way to use its existing 3D CAD data beyond design and bring 3D information into manufacturing operations.

Lattice Technology provided XVL Studio Pro, XVL Integration Toolkit, and the XVL format to convert Solid Edge 3D design data into lightweight manufacturing data integrated with PLM/ERP systems. With Lattice Technology’s solution, L-3 Communications reported about a 6% improvement in assembly processes, roughly 20% fewer engineering changes, and part searches that dropped from about two weeks to seconds, while also enabling paperless workflows and faster learning on the shop floor.
