Why Harvard University Chose LastPass to Bolster their Campus-Wide Security Initiative

Harvard University launched a campus-wide security initiative and needed a university-funded password management solution to improve credential hygiene across staff and students. Information Security lead Miguel Sanchez, a long-time LastPass user, championed the tool; Harvard adopted LastPass in 2013, selecting an Enterprise site license that could be bundled with Premium accounts for personal users and complement existing privileged-account tooling like CyberArk.

LastPass was piloted and rolled out in targeted mini-deployments (e.g., the business school and employee credit union), providing Enterprise admin controls and group-policy capabilities so teams could manage their own environments. The LastPass deployment has increased user adoption and security awareness, improved Harvard’s overall security posture, and enabled local administrators to enforce stronger password practices — with plans to broaden deployment and eventually migrate some CyberArk functionality into LastPass.
