How University of Oklahoma encouraged better password hygiene and complexity with LastPass

University of Oklahoma, a public research university with 20,000+ undergraduates and over 10,000 staff across three campuses, faced widespread phishing and account compromise driven by weak passwords and fragmented security policies. Chief Information Security Officer Aaron Baillio sought a unified password strategy and selected LastPass’s password manager to simplify secure credential creation and enforcement campus-wide.

LastPass was deployed with features like a password generator, autofill, dark web monitoring, MFA support, managed company controls and a “Premium as a Perk” student offering, giving every user a secure vault and administrative oversight for departments. The university purchased 50,000 licenses, saw 50% adoption in two days and a steady 65% monthly adoption, reduced weak master passwords to three users out of 15,000, moved to an annual password reset policy, and significantly cut password change requests — demonstrable improvements credited to LastPass.
