Case Study: Hornsby Shire Council achieves improved password hygiene and secure remote access with LastPass

A LastPass Case Study

Preview of the Hornsby Shire Council Case Study

Hornsby Shire Council increased their password security using LastPass

Hornsby Shire Council, a local government organisation north of Sydney with more than 500 staff working across five divisions and a hybrid work model, faced poor password hygiene and an outdated on‑premise credential store that lacked scalability, disaster recovery and remote access. Tim Weddell, IT Operations Manager and long‑time LastPass user, recognised widespread credential reuse and insecure storage practices and pushed to replace the legacy tool with a cloud solution, selecting LastPass Business (procured via partner totalCyber).

LastPass delivered a cloud‑based password management rollout across the organisation, expanded access beyond IT, and bundled features such as the Families as a Benefit program and an automatic password generator to drive better habits. Working with totalCyber on training, champions, gamified security scores and ongoing support, LastPass enabled Hornsby Shire Council to replace the on‑premise system, provide password management to 500+ employees, reduce weak/reused credentials and secure critical privileged accounts while increasing adoption and overall security posture.
