How the City of Newport Beach Automated Permitting

The City of Newport Beach was facing a time-consuming and inefficient manual process for making building permits publicly available, which could take up to four weeks. To address this challenge, they implemented a solution from vendor Laserfiche using its Quick Fields, Workflow, and WebLink products to automate their permitting system.

The Laserfiche solution automated the scanning, data extraction, and filing of permit documents. Quick Fields processed the scanned files, extracting data from barcodes and preparing them. Workflow then automatically populated document metadata by querying the city's permitting system and routed files for storage. This allowed permits to be made available on the public website via WebLink in less than a minute. The results for the city included annual savings of $6,500 from in-house scanning, the elimination of metadata entry errors, and dramatically faster public access to permits.
