College of the Desert, a California community college in Palm Desert serving about 15,000 students, was processing 20,000–30,000 documents annually with paper-based forms. Students endured long travel and service lines, records were routed through as many as five siloed departments, and files were frequently lost or stuck in processing.
The college replaced 20 paper forms with Laserfiche electronic forms in the student portal and automated more than 50 processes so submissions auto-route, send status emails, and attach to the student information system with metadata tracking. Processing time for applications and petitions fell by 40%, student inquiries and counter lines dropped, accreditation standards were met, satisfaction improved, and the college earned a Models of Efficiency Award.
