Automated Energy, an energy management consultancy, collaborated with the City of Palo Alto Utilities to address a challenge in their metering systems. The city needed to integrate its separate dial-up electric and manual gas/water meter reading systems into a single, uniform process using its existing fiber network. The goal was to eliminate unreliable dial-up communication and dedicated phone lines. Automated Energy worked with vendor Lantronix, utilizing their UDS100 device server.

The solution implemented by Lantronix involved using the UDS100 to replace the dial-up modems, enabling all utility meters to communicate over the Internet via serial tunneling. This allowed the city to successfully pilot a robust data channel that eliminated the costs and errors associated with phone lines. The results were a streamlined reading process, improved data accuracy, and the preservation of existing infrastructure, demonstrating the potential for wider implementation across the utility sector.
