United Illuminating Company, an investor-owned electric distribution utility serving more than 325,000 customers in Connecticut, needed a better way to manage growing volumes of meter data from its hybrid AMR/AMI network. Its legacy data management system had reached its limits, making it difficult for analysts and customer service teams to access information quickly for billing inquiries, outage detection, theft analysis, and renewable energy programs. Landis+Gyr’s Gridstream MDMS was selected as the data management platform supporting these smart grid and billing needs.

Landis+Gyr implemented Gridstream MDMS to centralize historical meter reads and events, provide role-based access, and automate validation, estimation, editing, and virtual/net metering processes. The solution integrated with UI’s CIS, portals, OMS, MWMS, and other systems, giving CSRs and analysts a consolidated view of customer usage and reducing manual investigation time. As a result, United Illuminating streamlined meter-to-bill processing, improved customer service productivity, and eliminated the need for two meters in net metering installations, while also supporting TOD billing and future microgrid initiatives.
