Die Elektrizitätswerke des Kantons Zürich (EKZ), one of Switzerland’s largest state-owned utilities, wanted to launch a smart metering project to improve grid efficiency, support sustainable energy use, and meet clear technical and financial objectives. EKZ selected Landis+Gyr’s Gridstream end-to-end smart metering solution, including PLC-based metering devices and MDUS software, to fit its requirements.
Landis+Gyr implemented a scalable Gridstream deployment with 1,000 smart metering points, data concentrators, a hybrid load switch, and customer-facing tools such as ecoMeter and an online portal. The rollout delivered monthly billing, on-demand readings in 2 minutes, regular readings in 3 seconds, and an 80–99% increase in MDM efficiency, while also enabling daily updates of 15-minute load profiles and better operational efficiency.
