Landis+Gyr brings PLC based smart metering to Slovenia

Elektro Ljubljana, Slovenia’s largest utility, needed a smart metering solution that could support dynamic tariff control for 6,600 end consumers, including 4,000 customers in areas without existing infrastructure for these services. It chose Landis+Gyr and its PLAN PLC-based communication interface to meet both technological and regulatory requirements.

Landis+Gyr implemented smart meters with PLAN PLC interfaces, data concentrators at 246 transformer stations, and centralized communications via GSM/GPRS or Ethernet. The result was reliable tariff control and added customer services such as more accurate billing and web-based consumption monitoring; later performance tests showed strong PLC performance even in difficult network conditions, with only about 0.1% of 4 million frames lost, and Elektro Ljubljana planned to add another 30,000 metering points.
