Case Study: Helen achieves smarter grid stability with Landis+Gyr and Toshiba Battery Energy Storage

A Landis+Gyr Case Study

Preview of the Helen Case Study

Landis+Gyr and Toshiba supply a Megawatt-class Battery Energy Storage System to Helen in Finland

Helen, one of Finland’s largest energy utilities, wanted to explore how megawatt-scale energy storage could improve smart grid operations in its Kalasatama smart city project. The challenge was to better manage renewable generation, grid stability, and new business models for stored energy. Landis+Gyr, together with Toshiba, supplied a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) for the pilot, including storage batteries, control systems, inverters, and a transformer.

Landis+Gyr delivered a 1.2 MW / 677 kWh BESS to Helen, featuring 13,440 Toshiba SCiB™ battery cells and integration with Helen’s Virtual Power Plant. The system was designed for fast charging and discharging, frequency control, voltage regulation, peak shaving, and backup power support. As the biggest BESS of its kind in the Nordic countries, it gave Helen a flexible tool to test new operating and pricing models while improving grid stability and supporting future commercial use of energy storage.
