Iberdrola, Spain’s leading energy group and one of the world’s largest electricity companies, faced a major regulatory challenge to replace all of its electricity metering points with smart meters by December 2018. To prepare for this nationwide rollout, Iberdrola partnered with Landis+Gyr and evaluated smart metering alternatives early, focusing on interoperable communications and support for remote management and time-of-use functionality.

Landis+Gyr helped Iberdrola implement PRIME-based smart metering using E450 smart electricity meters with OFDM PLC communications and interoperability with third-party PRIME data concentrators. In the Castellón pilot, 100,000 metering points were successfully tested, including around 40,000 Landis+Gyr meters, proving field interoperability, remote connect/disconnect, on-demand reading, and firmware upgrades. The solution enabled Iberdrola to start invoicing from smart meter data and laid the foundation for a full smart grid rollout across its 10.7 million customers.

Iberdrola
