A Labster Case Study
The University of Ottawa, a major bilingual institution, faced the challenge of scaling its chemistry courses to serve online students and those with limited lab access, while also contending with budget cuts that reduced the number of physical experiments. To enhance learning and provide context, Professor Dr. Alain St-Amant sought a solution and implemented virtual lab simulations from the vendor Labster.
Labster provided a solution by offering a platform of virtual lab simulations, which were translated into French to serve the bilingual student body. The implementation allowed students to perform experiments that were too dangerous, expensive, or complex to conduct physically at scale. The results included increased student engagement, with approximately 70% of students opting to complete the supplemental Labster simulations. These students demonstrated a noticeable improvement in their performance, and the tool successfully complemented the reduced schedule of physical labs, enriching the overall learning experience.
