University College Cork expands Labster across 80+ modules for 3,000 students

University College Cork (UCC) faced the challenge of improving student engagement, ensuring lab safety, and enabling the teaching of scientific subjects that were difficult or dangerous to execute in a traditional on-site lab. To address this, the university partnered with the vendor Labster to implement its virtual lab simulations as a supplemental teaching resource across its science, engineering, medicine, and health programs.

The solution implemented by Labster provided a platform for students to perform complex scientific techniques virtually, such as the dangerous Kjeldahl method, which was previously impossible in hands-on classes. Labster also allowed for the use of short-form, focused simulations to tailor content to specific courses. As a result, over 3,000 students across more than 80 modules now use the simulations, with the Lab Safety simulation made mandatory for all fourth-year students and new researchers to ensure university-wide safety prerequisites.
