A Labster Case Study
University College London (UCL) sought to implement a hybrid and flipped learning model for its Integrated Medical Sciences program. The challenge, faced by Senior Teaching Fellow Dr. Ioannis Papaioannou, was that experiential lab learning was confined to limited lab hours; he needed a way to frontload students with knowledge to maximize hands-on, problem-solving time during these expensive sessions. To address this, they adopted virtual lab simulations from the vendor Labster.
The solution involved using Labster's simulations as mandatory pre-lab exercises, allowing students to gain practical experience before physical labs. This ensured that valuable in-person time was used more effectively. As a result of implementing Labster, an evaluation trial showed a measurable positive impact on learning outcomes: students who completed the Labster simulations achieved significantly higher scores on their exams and coursework compared to those who did not.
