The Impact of Labster on an Introductory Chemistry Course at San José State University

San Jose State University faced the challenge of continuing its large introductory chemistry course when the COVID-19 pandemic prevented students from attending in-person laboratory sessions. The university needed a virtual solution to maintain educational quality and ensure students were prepared for future hands-on work. This led them to implement Labster's virtual lab simulations.

By using Labster, the university provided students with flexible, engaging, and safe virtual laboratory experiences. The results were significant, with the average final exam grade improving by 16%, from a D+ to a B-, and the overall course grade rising from a C+ to a B. A student survey revealed that 96% appreciated the flexibility and 85% felt prepared for in-person labs. Due to this success, San Jose State University plans to continue using Labster as a permanent supplement to its in-person laboratory instruction.
