Sapienza University of Rome gives 42 students virtual molecular biology labs with Labster

Sapienza University of Rome, a large institution with over 112,000 students, faced the challenge of providing hands-on lab training to its bioinformatics students during COVID-19. Physical wet labs had limited capacity, restricting student access and enrollment. Professor Rodolfo Negri sought a solution from the vendor Labster to overcome these physical constraints and allow students to perform experiments remotely.

Labster provided its molecular biology virtual lab simulations. This solution enabled all 42 students to perform experiments simultaneously without physical limitations, bridging a gap for bioinformatics students who were more versed in technology than wet lab work. The university successfully incorporated Labster for extra credit, resulting in 100% student participation and engagement. Professor Negri noted that Labster could help increase future student enrollment in lab-intensive courses by relieving the pressure on physical facilities.
