Paving the way towards personalizing science education

Taylor’s University, specifically its School of Biosciences, faced the challenge of teaching complex and resource-intensive lab techniques like mammalian cell culture. Limited lab time and resources constrained students' ability to practice and master both the technical skills and the underlying scientific principles. To address this, the university turned to vendor Labster and its virtual lab simulations to provide a more flexible and immersive learning environment.

The solution implemented was the integration of Labster's virtual labs into courses, used for pre-lab preparation, tutorial sessions, and even as a replacement for some physical labs. This allowed students to practice procedures without constraints, repeat labs for reinforcement, and engage with the material through a gamified, problem-based approach. The results were highly positive; a student survey found that 62.5% felt more confident in their lab skills, 56.3% found the simulation quizzes extremely helpful, and all students reported that the Labster simulations made learning more enjoyable.
