A Labstep Case Study
The Francis Crick Institute in London selected Labstep as its official electronic lab notebook (ELN) in March 2019 after a two‑year ELN review. Facing the challenge of standardising record-keeping and collaboration across 1,500 scientists and support staff in a large, multidisciplinary biomedical research environment, the institute needed a secure, auditable, and centrally managed platform that could integrate with existing infrastructure.
Labstep implemented a customised deployment including a personalised web domain with single sign-on (SSO), integrations with the Crick’s high-performance computing and data analytics platform (CAMP) to automatically save generated data to local servers, and a ServiceNow link for service requests. Labstep also pre-created user accounts, set up a custom project architecture, and provided training and onsite customer success support. The result is a single recommended ELN for all staff, a complete audit trail of research activity, immediate lab-wide access to updated protocols, and reduced reliance on printed protocols across the institute.
