A LabArchives Case Study
The University of San Diego, through Assistant Professor Fabio Agnelli, sought to modernize student research practices and improve the quality of lab reports. The challenge was to move away from error-prone, messy paper lab notebooks and the cumbersome process of submitting physical reports stained with chemicals without disrupting the meticulous workflow at the lab bench. To address this, the university adopted LabArchives' Electronic Lab Notebook (ELN) on tablets.
The solution involved deploying tablets with protective cases running the LabArchives mobile app directly at student bench stations. This provided a digital, cloud-based interface for data entry, making it easy to generate professional, cohesive, and permanent records. The results for the University of San Diego were a huge improvement in report quality and legibility, making them infinitely easier for instructors to grade. A key benefit highlighted by LabArchives was that no data was ever lost, ensuring the security and permanence of all research work.
