Insurer executes an enormous data migration to effect digital and cloud strategies

RSA Insurance, one of the world’s oldest general insurers supporting roughly 4.5 million policies, faced a major risk: its mainframe OS and systems software were on legacy technology losing support. To enable a digital-first, cloud-first strategy and de-risk its IT estate, RSA selected Kyndryl to migrate its infrastructure, software, and mainframe data to a secure, cloud-based IBM Z managed extended cloud IaaS (zCloud).

Kyndryl migrated three mainframe environments — including 11 LPARs, ~85 TB of disk across nearly 10,000 logical volumes and ~85 TB of tape across 25,000 virtual tapes — running more than 5,500 test cases to validate the move. The six‑month project (versus a 9–12 month industry average) delivered a ~30% batch performance gain, improved cost predictability by moving to a variable cloud model, and implemented high‑capacity, GDPR‑compliant, encrypted connectivity and multitenant resiliency under Kyndryl’s zCloud solution.
