Case Study: Macquarie University achieves agile, secure hybrid-cloud transformation with Kyndryl

A Kyndryl Case Study

Preview of the Macquarie University Case Study

Enabling innovative education and operating models in the cloud

Macquarie University, a top‑1% global university with more than 40,000 students, faced an IT estate of disparate legacy systems and aging datacenters that risked hardware failure, non‑compliance and operational disruption. To support a major digital transformation and create a resilient, agile platform for a virtual campus and new service models, Macquarie engaged Kyndryl to help migrate and modernize its infrastructure using a VMware Cloud on AWS solution and associated AWS services.

Kyndryl worked with AWS and VMware to build a VMware Cloud on AWS environment, establish an AWS landing zone, consolidate servers (from 936 to 480) and integrate Veeam Backup with AWS S3, plus add VMware Cloud Disaster Recovery. The migration moved 420 foundational VMs and 60 critical‑availability VMs in four months with no business disruption, decommissioned over 456 systems for a ~50% VM reduction, improved DR from partial to full testing, reduced costs and CO2 emissions, and delivered a more secure, compliant hybrid cloud—Kyndryl continues to support Macquarie with managed services.
