Cloud assessment uncovers significant cost savings and greater financial visibility

Ausgrid, the largest electricity distributor in New South Wales, needed better financial visibility and control over rapidly rising cloud costs after migrating many workloads to Microsoft Azure. As its cloud spend climbed unpredictably—up 25% in the first half of 2023—Ausgrid brought in Kyndryl and its Cloud Spend Optimization Assessment / FinOps expertise to identify what was driving the increases and where savings could be found.

Kyndryl analyzed Ausgrid’s Azure usage and spend using its Cost and Asset Management tooling plus Azure-native tools, then delivered a six-week assessment and transformation roadmap. The review identified 1,264 optimization opportunities across compute, storage, databases, network, and application services, with potential savings of more than 8% of Azure spend and an estimated 23:1 ROI; implementation discussions were underway, with completion expected in 2024.
