Alpitour World, one of Europe's largest travel and tourism companies, faced a challenge modernizing its inflexible and expensive on-premises mainframe environment. Its critical B2C and B2B applications were written in COBOL and maintained by a small team, making them difficult to modify and hindering business agility. Partnering with vendor Kyndryl, Alpitour World sought to migrate these core applications to Amazon Web Services (AWS) to create a scalable foundation for innovation.

Kyndryl refactored thousands of COBOL programs into Java and migrated them to AWS in a big-bang cutover with zero business disruption. The solution, developed in partnership with AWS and Astadia, also involved mapping modern alternatives for legacy tools and migrating over 1,600 workflows. For Alpitour World, Kyndryl's work resulted in 25-30% cost savings, created new CI/CD pipelines for rapid innovation, and increased business availability with highly resilient cloud resources.
