Kx powers Data Mart for Ontario’s Smart Meter Data

The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) in Ontario, a body ensuring the province's energy supply, faced the challenge of processing and analyzing an immense and rapidly growing database of smart meter data. Their existing relational database system was unable to efficiently handle over 100 million daily meter reads and the subsequent volume of data requests, risking the performance of their core operations. To solve this, they turned to vendor Kx Systems and implemented a Data Mart using their kdb+ technology.

Kx Systems provided a high-performance kdb+ database solution that could ingest data in near real-time and handle hundreds of web-service requests per second. The implementation delivered query results over 100 times faster than the previous system, provided 24/7 data access, and made over nine years of historical data available for advanced analytics. This enabled the IESO to support Ontario's utilities with improved responsiveness and a greatly enhanced scope of services.
