Case Study: Ygrene achieves faster, safer deployments and lower cloud costs with Kubernetes

A Kubernetes Case Study

Ygrene Using Cloud Native to Bring Security and Scalability to the Finance Industry

Ygrene, a Property Assessed Clean Energy financing company, needed a way to scale its loan underwriting and deployment processes without huge refactors or added risk. Its large, data-heavy Ruby on Rails and Scala environment had become unstable on AWS Elastic Beanstalk, with deployments taking three to four hours and scaling limited by massive servers and vertical growth constraints.

Using Kubernetes, along with kops, Notary, and Fluentd, Ygrene containerized its application, improved security and observability, and moved to horizontally scaled Kubernetes clusters on AWS EC2 Spot. Kubernetes reduced deploy time to about five minutes within an overall hour-long release process, enabled three to four deployments per week with no downtime, and cut cloud costs to one-tenth of the previous level.
