ThredUp - Customer Case Study

ThredUp, the San Francisco eCommerce company behind the largest online consignment store for women’s and children’s clothes, was growing fast but still operating a partially microservices-based environment on handcrafted servers. The lack of standardization and heavy infrastructure management slowed productivity and made it hard for engineers to move quickly, test ideas, and own the full DevOps lifecycle.

To modernize its platform, ThredUp adopted Kubernetes for container orchestration and migrated its entire infrastructure over the course of a year, using tools like Helm and Fluentd. With Kubernetes, ThredUp cut new service rollout from weeks to minutes or hours, reduced average deployment time by about 50%, kept lead time under 20 minutes, deprecated more than 3,200 Ansible scripts, and lowered hardware costs by 56% while doubling the number of services it runs.
