Sling TV: Marrying Kubernetes and AI to Enable Proper Web Scale

Sling TV, a streaming television provider in Englewood, Colorado, needed a way to deliver live TV over the internet at web scale while maintaining flexibility, reliability, and the ability to support rapid customer growth. As its legacy systems began to strain under increasing demand, Sling TV turned to Kubernetes to help build a next-generation cloud-native platform for its personalized customer experience.

Using Kubernetes with Rancher, Sling TV created a hybrid-cloud, multi-data-center platform spanning on-premises VMware environments and public clouds, with supporting tools such as Prometheus, Jaeger, Zenoss, New Relic, and ELK for monitoring, tracing, and logging. The results were significant: new applications could be onboarded in about an hour instead of several days, deployment and operational costs dropped by two to three orders of magnitude, and Sling TV gained the scalability and automation needed to support high-volume services and one-click data center provisioning.
