PingCAP Bets on Cloud Native for Its TiDB Database Platform

PingCAP, the company behind the open source NewSQL database TiDB, needed a way to deploy, run, and manage a distributed stateful database in containerized, hybrid multi-cloud environments. As part of its cloud native strategy, PingCAP looked for an orchestration layer that could simplify operations for customers while delivering a consistent, reliable experience across clouds.

Using Kubernetes, PingCAP integrated cloud native orchestration into TiDB and built the Kubernetes-based TiDB Operator to automate deployment, scaling, upgrades, scheduling, and maintenance. The result has been a very positive customer response, zero-downtime management of TiDB clusters, and improved internal efficiency: cluster deployment time dropped from hours to minutes, resource usage improved, and productivity rose by about 15%, with expectations to exceed 20% as Kubernetes expertise grows.
