Inside JD.com's Shift to Kubernetes from OpenStack

JD.com, one of China’s largest companies, needed a faster, more reliable way to deploy and scale applications as it moved from physical machines to containers. After initially using an OpenStack + NovaDocker-based approach, the company looked for a more application-focused platform to support modern development and operations at scale.

Using Kubernetes, JD.com built its JDOS 2.0 container engine platform, integrating Docker, Jenkins, GitLab, Harbor, Prometheus, and its own Cane networking layer to support CI/CD, logging, monitoring, and flexible scheduling. The result was a more complete application platform that cut scaling to seconds, increased overall resource utilization by about 30%, and supported around 20,000 Pods across 2 clusters, while JDOS 2.0 covered about 20% of JD.com’s applications.
