How We Architected and Run Kubernetes on OpenStack at Scale at Yahoo! JAPAN

Yahoo! JAPAN needed a way to modernize its infrastructure and make application delivery easier across multiple platforms, including OpenStack VMs, bare metal, and containers. Working with Kubernetes, and with help from Google and Solinea, the company set out to build a more automated, production-ready deployment workflow that could support multi-tenancy, security, networking, storage, and service discovery at scale.

Kubernetes was used as the container platform on OpenStack instances, integrated with tools like Jenkins, Artifactory, Terraform, Calico, and OpenStack Keystone to create a “one-click” CI/CD pipeline from code push to deployment. The solution also standardized image creation for VM, bare metal, and container targets, and helped Yahoo! JAPAN manage more than 30 OpenStack clusters while improving operational simplicity and enabling Kubernetes-based deployment of services, including OpenStack itself.
