How the City of Montréal Is Modernizing Its 30-Year-Old, Siloed Architecture with Kubernetes

The City of Montréal, a large government organization with more than 1,000 applications across mainframes, Windows, Linux, Oracle, and other legacy systems, needed to break down long-standing IT silos and modernize its 30-year-old architecture. To do that, it turned to Kubernetes to help create a more integrated, flexible, and vendor-neutral platform for modern application delivery.

Kubernetes helped the City of Montréal move from a small Docker setup to a fully orchestrated container platform with Helm, Prometheus, Fluentd, and Grafana. The result was a dramatic improvement in speed and efficiency: deployments dropped from months to hours, time to market improved from many months to a few weeks, and 200 application components now run on just 8 machines for a production environment, managed by a team of only 5 people.
