Ant Financial's Hypergrowth Strategy Using Kubernetes

Ant Financial, the fintech arm behind Alipay, needed a way to support massive transaction volumes, real-time processing, and strict reliability at hyperscale. As the company grew to serve 900+ million users worldwide and handle peak loads like 256,000 transactions per second on Singles Day, it turned to Kubernetes to orchestrate its tens of thousands of containerized nodes and modernize its infrastructure.

Kubernetes was selected as the de facto standard for orchestration, alongside CNCF tools such as Prometheus, OpenTracing, etcd, and CoreDNS. Ant Financial migrated all core financial systems to containers by November 2017, with migration to Kubernetes still ongoing, and reported at least a tenfold improvement in operations and output. The company also gained greater flexibility for future growth, while continuing to scale its cloud-native platform without yet focusing on cost optimization.
