Case Study: Booking.com Accelerates Service Delivery with Kubernetes

A Kubernetes Case Study

After Learning the Ropes with a Kubernetes Distribution, Booking.com Built a Platform of Its Own

Booking.com, the Netherlands-based travel company, needed a better way to give product developers faster access to infrastructure. After migrating to a Kubernetes-based OpenShift platform in 2016, they found that Kubernetes was too abstracted away from developers, creating a knowledge bottleneck for the infrastructure team when issues arose.

To solve this, Booking.com built its own vanilla Kubernetes platform with Kubernetes, asking developers to learn the basics in exchange for a more native experience. The result was strong adoption and much less time to provision services: new services could be created in as little as 10 minutes, about 500 new services were built in the first eight months, and the platform supported hundreds of releases per day.
