Afosto, a Dutch SaaS provider for omnichannel commerce, was transitioning to an API-first architecture to support over 90 cloud-native microservices across its retail platform. As traffic spikes, security needs, and configuration complexity grew, Afosto needed a scalable, flexible gateway solution to manage and secure its rapidly expanding microservices environment.

Afosto implemented KrakenD as its API gateway on Google Cloud GKE, using configuration-as-code and OpenAPI-driven CI automation to build and manage a single gateway config from all service definitions. With KrakenD, Afosto gained token invalidation support, strong performance, horizontal scalability, and reduced operational overhead; after a year in production, the team reported they had “never regretted the choice” and noted the gateway added critical security features with zero to little overhead.
