Case Study: Hepsiburada reduces microservices complexity with KrakenD

A KrakenD Case Study

Preview of the Hepsiburada Case Study

Dealing with 500 Microservices in the Largest Turkish ECommerce

Hepsiburada, Turkey’s largest e-commerce platform, was managing 500 microservices across 40+ autonomous teams and needed a better way to handle shared concerns like authentication, rate limiting, access management, and protection against malicious traffic. To simplify its architecture and reduce engineering overhead, it chose KrakenD as its API gateway.

KrakenD was implemented as a Kubernetes ingress-like gateway and Backend For Frontend (BFF) layer for multiple frontend teams, aggregating microservice responses, caching heavily, and offloading security and API-management tasks from individual services. The result was a more scalable, less complex microservices setup running in about 800 Docker containers across Hepsiburada’s Kubernetes clusters, with faster delivery, cleaner separation of public and internal APIs, and reduced burden on development teams.
